About Brousse Flammand

It is difficult to find someone as passionate, involved and instrumental to the Michif nation as Brousse Flammand. Over the span of his career, Brousse has shown time and time again his lifelong and deep-rooted commitment to the betterment of the Michif people in Canada. Raised traditionally by his grandparents, his mooshom and koohkom, in Tokyo, Saskatchewan (now most known as the area of Crescent Lake), he has a profound understanding of the Michif ways, the language, spirituality, traditions, history and way of life.

He has been instrumental to the foundation of numerous important organizations and government bodies, such as the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan, for which he was the Chief Executive Officer from 1967 – 1978 and the Gabriel Dumont Institute, as well as the Métis National Council. He was president of the National Metis Veterans Association, which played an important role in the advocacy for Métis veterans. He was also a member of the Task Force on Aboriginal Languages and Cultures, a team tasked in 2003-4 to travel across Canada, meet with various nations to develop a language revitalization strategy for Indigenous languages of Canada. He has also developed language programs and curriculum for early learning centres.

Brousse is currently the president of the Michif kaa-piikishkwaychik, or Michif Speakers Association, and is involved in many initiatives to promote, share and teach Michif language, culture and knowledge systems.

This website is meant to share some of the precious historical and political knowledge Brousse has learned throughout his life and career, as well as his insights and strategy to inform and mobilize the Michif nation to re-affirm and empower itself in this new age.
